Succulent Sausage Rolls

We may have the right recipe for you! These rolls are a golden yellow color once they are baked. They smell delicious! The special ingredient that makes them moist is healthful for you! We can keep that ingredient a secret just between us.

Succulent Sausage Rolls

  • 2 tablespoons yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup cooked, mashed squash
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups flour
  • 2 one-pound packages breakfast sausages

1 cup of warm water into which you dissolve 2 tablespoons of yeast(that is 2 packages of yeast if you do not buy it in bulk.)

While the yeast is proofing, combine 1 egg, 2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup cooked and mashed squash. There it is the ingredient you may just want to keep to your self! Mix the above ingredients together well. Then add the proofed yeast. Mix a little. Add the flour 1 cup at a time. First you will stir in the flour. As the mixture becomes thicker, you need to knead. Keep kneading and adding flour (up to 6 cups) until the dough is not too sticky. Make sure you use flour to get all the dough off the sides of the bowl also the spoon, and knead that in as well. The kneading should take about 5-6 minutes. Grease the bowl. Plop the dough into it, turn the dough over in the bowl. Cover the bowl and let it rise in a prewarmed oven of 180 degrees that is off, for one hour.

Frying breakfast sausages

Start frying the little breakfast sausages. 2  one pound packages should be enough. When they are all fried, cover them with aluminum foil to keep them warm.

Cutting triangles of dough

When the hour is over, knead the dough a few times. Flour part of your work surface.  Take a large handful of dough, place it in the center of the flour and roll it to about an eighth inch thickness. Trim off the ends to make a rough rectangle. Now cut the rectangle into triangles that start out about the width of the sausage and taper down to a point. See the picture above. Wrap a sausage in the triangle of dough starting at the wide end. See the picture below. When it is wrapped, place it on a greased tray. Repeat these steps until you you have all the sausages wrapped.

If you still have dough left, take a small handful and roll it like you would to make a meatball. Place on the tray.  When all the dough has been utilized, cover the trays and let rise for 45 minutes. After 30 minutes has elapsed light the oven to 400 degrees. When the oven is at the correct temperature, place rolls in the oven and bake for 10 minutes until lightly browned. Serve warm.

You can store the rolls in a plastic bag in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat the rolls at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

Cleaning With a Coffee Container

Spring is right around the corner and so is spring cleaning. I was raised, that when you clean something, you get the cleaning bucket. You fill the cleaning bucket with warm water and then pour in the cleaner. Perhaps there is a better way!

To save money on cleaning products look at the manufacturers direction and used the advised amount of cleaner per gallon of water. Measuring saves money!

My daughter had this idea. For smaller jobs use less cleaner by filling a coffee container with warm water and using a fraction of what you would put in a bucket of water. If you are like me or my daughter, you may only have time to clean for an hour or even a half hour. That is okay. Doing a little bit at a time is better than putting off til tomorrow what should be done today.  You do not need a full bucket of steaming water to clean one cabinet or the refrigerator.

Sometimes I only have time to clean one shelf in a cabinet during the evening.  I grab an empty coffee container fill it halfway with warm water and then add a little wood cleaning detergent. I empty the dishes from the shelf into the dishwasher. I wipe the ceiling of the cabinet, the three walls of the cabinet. If there is a reusable shelf liner, I put that in another coffee container with some warm water and dish detergent to soak. Later I wash it out and then hang it over the shower head to dry if it is winter or nighttime or outside in the summertime.

If there are dishes to be washed, I wash them and let them dry. While waiting for the shelf liner to dry, I put the clean, dry dishes on a tray which I leave on the counter or the table, out of the way. The next evening I put the clean shelf liner on the shelf and replace the clean dishes. If I still have time, I clean the next shelf.
